jasper, canada?

Q: how far is Jasper from Banff ? any place/s to recommend to see and visit there ?

A: Jasper is about 290km from Banff, and takes about four hours to drive. The drive itself is something to do, as the Icefields Parkway is one of the most breathtaking routes through the Rockies. About 100km from Jasper along the Parkway is the Columbia Icefields which boasts 6 glaciers among them the Athabasca. As well take a detour to Lake Louise which is about 55km (45min) outside of Banff. The chateau is gorgeous as is the lake and it's a short distance to Moraine Lake, another showstopper. There's loads to do in Jasper as well, hiking trails are all over the place, from short little walks to half and full day hikes. This year is the town's centennial so I am sure there will be lots of events to celebrate it. The Jasper Rodeo is in August this year, and the folk festival is August 3&4th. If you like fishing, there's lots of that available as well. You'll have to buy a National Parks license when you arrive at one of the shops in town, there are several guiding services available who also rent equipment. If you will be staying in town a few days, I'd recommend a drive to Maligne Lake. It's the longest lake in the Rockies, something like 21km I think, there are hiking trails there,as well as a boat tour down the lake. There are three horseback riding stables in the area that I can remember, One at the Jasper Park Lodge, one at Maligne Lake, and one called Pyramid Stables a short drive outside of town. I never got the chance to try the Maligne Lake stables, but the other two were well worth the time. They still do float trips down the Athabasca River as well, which is a class 2 whitewater trip with a couple of class three runs depending on the water levels. If you would like to go for class 3 rapids, there are places in town that can book you on trips on the Fraser River in Mount Robson. The trips include travel to Robson (which is in BC). Also well worth it if you are a little adventurous. And from what I've heard from friends is that the snow was great this year, meaning the water will be running fast and exciting. Hope you have fun! Oh, there's also the tramway on Whistler Mountain which although is quite touristy is fun, and you can see the entire town. There's also the Miette Hot Springs.
