Calgary vs. Winnipeg?

Q: Hi ... I am living in Winnipeg, and thinking of moving back to Alberta, probably Calgary. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on a comparison of the two cities. I have lived in Calgary but it's been a couple of years, and I know things have changed a lot in the last few years. Thanks.

A: I'm from Winnipeg, and many of my family and friends are in Calgary. You're not really hurting in either city, are you? The consensus I've heard is that Winnipeg's society is easier to fit into. Life is easier to afford, too. Calgary is better if housing and money isn't a problem (or you can't imagine it ever being a problem), if you love having an NHL team, and if Winnipeg's winter takes too much out of you. Not that Calgary's winter is a cakewalk, but it's not quite as challenging as Winnipeg. Education and cultural activities etc, pretty even steven. I'd be very reluctant to leave Winnipeg, personally - no matter where the destination was. But I'm sure I'd say the same if I was brought up in Calgary, I probably would be reluctant to go to Winnipeg or anywhere else. I say Winnipeg, but I understand it's a biased answer. Ex-Winnipeggers often say they're frustrated at the hold that WInnipeg has on them, they always seem to miss it moreso than people from other cities miss their cities when they relocate.
