Why is it so expensive to fly to Edmonton?

Q: I've noticed that flights to Edmonton from my area (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale) are on the expensive side, and range from $575 to $680....and these are the cheapest I've seen. Why is it so expensive? Would love to visit my new son-in-law and daughter with our family (5), but have been in sticker shock since the price is so high. Not an option at this time to fly them here, as my daughter is trying to get her residency all sorted out. Thank you , Laura

A: Considering the mileage those prices aren't totally outrageous. I did find out if you flew Northwest Airlines the cost was $504.48 and with United the cost is $567.23 to Edmonton from your area. Maybe having flexible dates may benefit you even more. In comparison Miami to Portland, Oregon was $872.06 plus $185.91 tax. The distance is approx. the same. You may think the price of the ticket for one person may sound really out of line but when you want to fly a family of 5 the cost seems expensive - I understand but in reality it's quite reasonable. When I fly Edmonton to the Nova Scotia even on a half price seat sale I'm paying well over the $600 - again same number of flying hours. I agree some people can fly to Britain for the same price on a discount airline. Canada does have more airline than just Westjet and Air Canada but those two are the major players. Edmonton is an International airport not in Timbuktu - the difference between flying to Calgary as opposed to Edmonton are a mere few dollars if any. I would not go to the hassle and expense of flying into Calgary and renting a car (Actual rental would be $36.43 with return to same location only - thus not making it feasible) or busing it - makes little sense because it will cost more in the long run and to say nothing of the inconvenience. You may want to watch for seat sales if you are flexible with your departure dates. An option would be to check several travel sites for even last minute deals. Have a good trip and enjoy Edmonton
