Q: Will you need to check with the frondesk first?
A: Policy varies depending on hotel, hotel chain, city, neighbourhood and time of day. But I find more and more currently have a lock down policy. Many you can only get into the lobby, and the elevator and stairs can only be accessed if you have a room key. So you have to contact your friend to come get you, or to have your friend allow the front desk to give you a key that will work for the elevator. Other places you can walk right in and wonder the halls during the day. But by 10 PM or midnight you have to check with the front desk. They sometimes lock the front door, and if you don't have a key you are dealing with the night desk to get where you are going.
