A: Technically all travel into the US except from a US territory requires a valid passport. Since you are travelling to Canada in theory you could fly without a passport however you would not be able to return to the US by air. In practise airlines can require you to present a passport for travel outside of the US and can refuse you boarding if you fail to present one.
