Moving to Vancouver - what should I be aware of?

Q: I am moving to Vancouver for one year next weekend. Is there anything I should be aware of? What are some of the must-sees? And where should I go to meet peoble?

A: People have given you some good advice so far, so I'll try not to repeat them! Places to meet people-I've always found that if you have an activity/hobby/sport ect that you enjoy, and can find a local team/community centre, ect to join a group, that you will find people to hang out with. Lots of people hang out at coffee shops too... As for things to be aware off...that kind of depends on where you are coming from. Ex, if from another country, we drive on the right side of the road, you will pay 13% taxes on most things (6% gst-federal tax and 7% pst-provincial), legal age in BC is 19 (to drink and buy cigarettes), legal driving age is 16. Vancouver has an amazing variety of foods, restaurants ect! Sooo many different cultures in one city!!! Van has a good public transportation service. As others have said, the skytrain is a great way to get around, but be aware at all times when travelling on or near it. And I wouldn't recommend travelling on it alone after dark. The Capilano Suspension Bridge and Stanley Park are must sees!!! Take the seabus! And check out Granville Island. Robson Street has some awesome stores, and Metro Town is a huge mall!!! Ikea is a must see (haha)...if you need to buy furniture... AND...make sure that you take the ferry AT LEAST once over here to Victoria for a visit!!
