Native American/Canadian, BC, Jewellery Class's or Learning?

Q: I am very interested in learning how to work with silver and gold and how to make jewellery? Just can't seem to find any sites that promote this in my area, does anyone know of any teachers in the Lower Mainland Area?

A: Hi, you will find a teacher by contacting different artists and asking them who teaches. Go around to a few galleries and shops that sell this type of jewellery, and find out who the artists are. You will soon be able to identify artists by their individual style, and begin to notice small details about their work. This will help you to ultimately decide who you would like to have as a teacher. .Most artists don't teach beginners, but you may find one that does, they are few and far between. There is a lot of groundwork in metalworking that just takes time and practise. You can go to school to learn the basics, which would be the best and most cost-effective way to develop your skills and style. Then you would be more likely to easily find a teacher for the work you want to do. When you have mastered the basics and can present some of your work to a teacher whose style you admire, there is always the possibility of an apprenticeship. For schools in your area, you could ask at Emily Carr, and I think there is a Vancouver College of Art & Design degree program, and perhaps even Capilano College offers courses. Going to school would be the best in the long run, because any art form requires that you practise, practise, practise, and at least at school you don't have to pay for equipment and tools, just the cost of the course and the metals.
