Q: I plan to stay in the Budget Inn Patricia Hotel towards the end of December for my Christmas break in Vancouver the address of this Hotel Inn is "403 East Hastings St., Vancouver BC, V6A " Is anyone here familiar with this location or perhaps you have stayed there or lived near by, Can you advise me if this part of East Hastings is one of the more slum parts of town. I have heard that East Hastings is an area to be avoided as there is a lot of drugs and prostitution. But i understand that some parts of East Hastings are worse than others, Can someone tell me what this part of town is like before i book my stay, should i avoid it at all costs or is this part of East Hastings OK, I will be traveling back to this Hotel at night after day trips out so i need a heads up on this, Many thanks.

A: if you can stay at another hotel, please do. i used to live in vancouver up until march of this year. my husband and i used to go to that area a lot coz it's right next door to chinatown. cheap food, cheap goodies. but it's really a scary place. i don't know where that tourist really went... but it really is the sketchy part of town. it's probably the worst area of the entire lower vancouver mainland. the area around the corner of east hastings and main streets is where the druggies and prostitutes mill around. i even saw one woman who was pretty beat up. her face was battered and she has dried blood all over it and her clothes. my husband and i would always lock the doors of our car whenever west hastings becomes east hastings. we don't lock our car when we drive... vancouver is really safe so that says a lot. please don't think vancouver is not a nice place. it is a really really great place. it's my most favorite place... not even hawaii can come close in my list (in my list, lemme stress that out). that area is the only blemish of the entire vancouver area though. the hotel is too far into the east hastings area... i wouldn't recommend it. if it was a couple of blocks or so from west hastings, it should be fine. but the more removed you are from west hastings... the more unsafe it is.
