Q: So a longer layover on my way to Asia saved me $250 on my ticket....but what is there to do in Vancouver during that time? Am I allowed to leave the airport? If I can is there a bus or other form of cheap transportation from the airport into the city. Is there a lot to do in the airport? Someone told me that for layovers over a certain amount of time they'll give you a room or something to stay in...is this true? Anyway...any advice would be much appreciated!! I'm flying from Winnipeg, the layover is from 1:49 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. flying to Hong Kong, if that helps. Thanks so much!!

A: Vancouver has great public transportation. Buses right at the door of the airport. The airport has many shops and a visitor centre where you can get maps and advice on things to do. The airport's website is www.yvr.ca it has a section about shops and one about public transportation among other things. Leaving the airport shouldn't be a problem but you will need to go through security again when you return. You won't get a hotel room unless you paid for one. If it is a nice day go for a walk in Stanley park or walk Granville-Robson-Denman-Davie streets..Unless you'd rather walk on Commercial drive or 4th avenue or see the pot cafes on Hastings (I wouldn't recommend it but so many travellers just have to see these cafes where you can smoke weed! I think you are supposed to bring your own weed but I assume there is someone selling pretty close to the door. This is near a pretty bad area where all kinds of deseperate harder drug users hang out.) Have fun!
