Q: I currently have a Whistler 35r..I want to get the Whistler XTR330 but is it worth buying it?

A: I would not recommend Whistler brand to anyone. As an alternative to buying a cheap radar detector, I would seriously consider just never driving fast. If you want a worthwhile radar detector, plan to spend at least $250, preferably more. Buying a cheap radar detector will cost you in the end. The cheaper the radar detector, the fewer features it has, the fewer radar bands it detects, the less likely it is to detect those bands, the more often you will receive false alerts, and the more visible it is to police radar detector detectors (RDD). If you use a cheap radar detector, you are likely to 1. not receive an alarm when you should, 2. receive false alarms when you shouldn't, and 3. receive a ticket and have the device confiscated. Also, the police officer may use laser (LIDAR), in which case a radar detector is useless. It takes 0.3 seconds from the time the laser hits your vehicle to the time the speed appears in the police laser gun. If your radar detector alerts to laser, it's far too late to slow down; your speed has already been measured. The ONLY defense against police laser is a laser jammer, which jams the laser gun's speed reading until you turn the jammer off. Unlike radar jammers, which are illegal to use nearly everywhere; laser jammers are legal in almost all states. For the best protection, get the best radar detector you can afford. In places where police use laser, you must use a laser jammer.
