East Broadway vs. other parts of Vancouver BC?

Q: Hi, I've decided to rent a room in East Broadway (close to the VCC Skytrain station) and I was wondering if this is a good neighborhood to live in? I'm gonna be there just for 3 months and then go back to Europe. What do you think about this place? Is it safe, interesting, etc - in comparison with other parts of Vancouver? (except downtown) Thanks a lot

A: I've lived in the area in the recent past for some time and I felt safe and comfortable. You're within 5 - 15 minutes walking distance of Commercial Drive (depending on your exact location) which is definitely one of the more "interesting" areas of Vancouver. Lots of diversity, hippies, organic type food stores, hemp shops, some street people, some strange street guy who walks up and down the drive playing his spoons on his thigh all day every day - that kind of "interesting". It's the kind of place where Greenpeace has stationed their Canadian headquarters at, for instance. There's the skytrain close by which is nice, there's the broadway express bus (99 B-Line) which has 2 stops in the area, which is convenient for sure. I felt quite safe in the area. There are other nice areas of Vancouver, which are probably more expensive, although this area is one of my favourite ones. Feel free to email me through my profile if you have more questions.
