Car rental in Canada?

Q: I'm planning to go to Vancouver later on this summer. To rent a car do I need any special drivers license or anything other than my US passport and California drivers license? Bus pass? I'm one of those southern Californians who can't do without their own car.

A: If you are over 25 those documents and a valid major credit card will be adequate. You might check, as sometimes when coming from someplace in the US it is cheaper to fly to Seattle and rent a car there. Almost all cars rented in Seattle can be driven into Canada without problems. The drive, including the time to cross the border (go through at Lynden-Aldergrove and avoid Blaine) takes a little more than 3 hours. I make the trip with some frequency and sometimes find the airfare to Seattle is so much cheaper than one to Vancouver that the excessive Washington State tax on car rentals is still worth paying, and the drive is not a bad one.
