Q: hey there... i am a sixteen year old Indian male, living in Dubai and will be going over to vancouver,BC in 2009 for higher education purposes. The institution I'm planning to go to is in West Hastings, Vancouver ,and apparently, from what I understand about this place I'm gonna have to work long and irregular hours there. So i guess I might have to find a place to stay in pretty close to West Hastings /Downtown. Now could any of you please tell me what you know about West Hastings? I mean, I would mainly like to know about the crime rate. Is it one of the safer areas in Vancouver or can i expect potential danger? Apart from this, how are 15 - 25 year old people in this area? I mean what are they like in general? Thanks.

A: If you can find a reasonable place right downtown or the West end of Vancouver or Kitsilano areas those are best. . West Hastings area in general is okay but East Hasting (east of Main street) is not a good area. That area has a lot crime and is the seedy side of the city. The west end of Vancouver is the gay area of town which doesnt translate into anything negative but you did ask about the locals. Coming from Dunbai that may be quite unique for you but its not contagious and here its very accepted and open. Its a blend of that, yuppies and singles and not alot of families. Kitsilano if you can afford that area is mostly yuppies and singles. Also note the skytrain runs right downtown and if there is a station close to your school you can live pretty much anywhere along it and have reasonable travel times. see http://www.translink.bc.ca for details on transit. and skytrain routes
