Does anyone know how socials started in Manitoba?

Q: I'm asking because I'm from AB (moved here now) and had never heard of them until I came here. Does anyone know the origin of this custom, and whether or not other provinces have them? (I know Alberta does not.)

A: Haha I am an ex-Winnipegger living in Alberta - and I was shocked to learn that Albertans have no idea what a social is (in fact I think they are not allowed here!!!). Anyway, I believe at one time, wedding socials were thrown by the wedding party as a surprise for the bride and groom. Members of the community would gather in recreation centres and multi-purpose halls to celebrate the joining of a couple. It was also a good way to gather money and things for the soon-to-be new couple. Since then it has moved on to be a way to fund raise for other purposes. Apparently wedding socials don't occur as often as they once did.... I imagine however, that in small towns they will continue since the communities are more closely knit. Also, they are also prevalent in SE Saskatchewan as well (I have been to one in Moosomin) Hope that helps a little
