Thompson, Manitoba?

Q: I am trying to plan a holiday to Canada where my children will be able to see wildlife. I was thinking of the northern Manitoba area in or near Thompson. Can anybody tell me if that is a good place to view big game such as deer, bear and wolves? Someone said both Thompson and Kenora are bad places to visit. Do either or both of those towns suffer from high crime rates? Why would either be a bad place to visit?

A: No one can predict when or where you see wildlife. Anywhere in northern MB though, does have a lot of deer and bears. Wolves tend to be more solitary...and hard to see. I lived in northern MB for 20 years and I saw deer a lot, bears a few times (usually when I didnt want to) and never saw a wolf. I love northern MB, but if I could make a suggestion...go to NW Ontario. If you go to the Kenora area, they have a LOT of deer right now, and bears are frequently in town. (seen more often than in northern MB) Kenora is on a bear migratory trail. I have seen a lot of bears at a local restaurant called The Log Cabin Tavern, on Rabbit Lake. Great place to eat, and if a bear comes by you will see it. Watch for deer as you drive too, they are EVERYWHERE in town-to the point they are almost a nuisance. (as beautiful as they are) Wolves are around too...take the kids out to a petting zoo outside of town at Laclu, and there is a pack of wolves around there. They are rarely seen, but they are there. (have been seen in the dusk/night times by a few people and the bears are also seen more in the evenings) There are moose around Kenora too...but more often seen in the Sioux Lookout area than around Kenora. Please be careful with any wildlife though. In both northern MB and NW Ontario every year tourists think the animals are "so cute" and feed them...and have been hurt. They are wild animals. Have a great & safe trip-no matter which area you go to. :) Edit for your second question: No, neither place is a "bad" place. The person who said that is a bitter individual who chose to say something negative since they had nothing better to say. Thompson and Kenora are not perfect; lock your cars, look both ways before crossing the street etc. At the same time they are better than some areas. I would feel safe walking the streets of both towns, with same caution I would use anywhere. Ignore the person who said that...I have answered your question honestly and I answer all questions the same way: to help people, not to get points.
